privilegedfolding

The folding and printing continues...with a view to thinking about editioning.
A day out in Newmarket to take part in garden of curious A'MUSE'ment - a project set up by http://www.unbosi.org/  - it was a kind of immersive interactive theatre piece - if you have young children I recommend getting to see one of their events - while there I dropped into The National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art.
https://www.palacehousenewmarket.co.uk/  which was really intriguing - alongside the really interesting objects connected to the sport of racing they have real horses which you can stroke, which was cool. The art collection does document the wealthy, privileged and questionable activity of the horse racing fraternity through the ages. Meanwhile a link to the Pattern and Chaos research page at Norwich University of the Arts  https://www.nuapatternandchaos.com/  - recently uploaded my answers to a set of questions -
Les describes his  practice and research as‘…searching for opportunities to be in a place of not knowing’ Les sees Pattern and Chaos as‘…finding the overwhelmingly extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary’ Les ‘s next big idea is‘…combining the experience of working in the crystallography department in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, Cambridge with what was learnt in synthetic anatomy at Kings, London to create public artwork for a housing estate in Chelmsford with Essex CC and inspire a series of handheld bookworks – it’s all about folding’ There is a symposium coming up and the line-up looks interesting and worth checking out.
so now to some films - do not watch the self indulgent possibly dubious (choose your ism) Lost in London - Woody Harrelson - the technical issue of one take is not interesting enough and apart from a 7 minute segment where Woody riffs with Owen Wilson which is funny it is bad. Meanwhile Orange is the New Black is just too oppressive, maybe it always was. I quite enjoyed The Giver - although a lot of the ideas are retreads from previous sci-fi tropes and actual films but it does look good.

workshopsandrecognition

excellent day at Camberwell running two workshops one that attempts to explore the impossible - the idea of creating an equation for finishedness in a piece of work and another that looked at the relationship we have as makers of objects with audiences through those very objects. Here are links to the presentations on Slideshare. https://www.slideshare.net/l.bicknell/13-02-18-context-audience-understanding-2018 https://www.slideshare.net/l.bicknell/13-02-18-finishedness-2018 It's a full on day with equations and diagrams created, negotiated  and shared. This has been developed through the work on the OCA and at the Maxwell Centre in Cambridge through the collaborations and workshops I ran with nano-technologists. The January edition of CavMag is out and the work I was involved in during my residency is featured. Really cool that I get to be in the same pages of incredibly intelligent, driven people who are working on important issues.

White Cube in Bermondsey has a somewhat amateur looking collection of works on display (maybe that was the point) - but it was a little like what you might do if you had your first stab at a show on a foundation course if you wanted to 'do' installation - Eddie Peake and display 'meaningful objects' - He Xiangyu. The saving grace was that the dj was playing good 'old skool' jungle and there was an extraordinary Gursky on display - looking forward to seeing the show at The Hayward.

Monday was another successful teaching day at NUA where the presentation was sent out before - from idea to outcome explores amongst other things an audit around skills based on Richard Serra's verb list of 1967-8 create your own list of stuff you do in the process of your practice and when you are stuck pick one from the list and enact it until something good happens. If you are feeling adventurous make a list of activities you don't engage in and pick one of those. It's all about the word and idea of practice. 5 slides at 10 seconds each with one question a slide - 50 second Pecha Kucha's fast and furious but it's a focused way to see what people are up to and to share ideas with everybody.
I last saw Bjork at MOMA in NY and the 2 screen surround sound  there blew me away - well that's in the new Bjork digital show at Somerset House so it was good to see it again but the VR experiences are quite amazing. In one you find yourself surrounded by multiple Bjorks on a beach and then later you are inside her mouth. The final one allows you to be inside her as she dances within, around and next to you all in a spectacular array of light. so go see the future.

Attended the launch of paying artists at Jerwood Space - still quite shocking to hear that 71% of artists showing in publicly funded spaces were not being paid. I can remember a time when I would be attending meetings only to realise that I was the only one in the building not being paid - generally those days are gone for me but the issue is still around - check out http://www.payingartists.org.uk/ to arm yourself with knowledge and to change the world for younger artists.also more work at https://unfoldingthinking.blogspot.co.uk/

oldoldoldandart

7 days in Rome ....... where to start - for some reason I had never been so an extensive tour of the top tourist locations were on the list - with the exception of the Coliseum and St Peters in the Vatican (pay to go in the lift) I would not recommend them - mainly due to the mass of tourists and no thank you I do not want to buy a selfi-stick - or maybe I should get one.....
A few of the truly extraordinary experiences off the so called beaten track include....The mummified monks at Santa Maria della Concezione, the dazzling crypt under Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, the view at night of and from Giuseppe Garibaldi's mausoleum, the walk from and tasting deep fried artichoke for the first time. Also managed to see some exceptional contemporary art in the most extravagant settings - both the buildings and the amount of staff on hand in what were often deserted spaces. The Macro has two sites - both fascinating - one in a deserted meat market which had disturbing (in a good way) work by Michael Fliri http://www.michaelfliri.com/ The other is in a converted Perone factory - it had an eclectic show about time, highlighting work that was familiar but by Italian artists - it was also showing work by william kentridge of his Rome project - but the highlight was the bizarre toilets - fantastic https://vimeo.com/18862925

The Maxi has to be experienced - a truly challehging version of where and how art should be displayed but it often it just got in the way. Zaha Hadid's building has the greatest spaces and I know I will find myself talking about it for some time but I'm unsure if it works as a display space for art or maybe the tension it creates is the point - It had thoughtful work which focused on current issues in Turkey - the use of textiles was extensive - special mention to work of Gülşah Kılıç http://tersyontersyon.blogspot.co.uk/ a mock radical coat and the films of Burak Delier https://burakdelier.wordpress.com/. especially songs of the possessed and Crisis and Control. There was also a show by Jimmie Durham which was fantastically jolly hung within a room with challenging windows and floor and also a show from a firm of radical designers from the 70s called SuperStudio -  some far out (in a good way) ideas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superstudio - it also has a great buffet lunch on Saturday. spent 20 minutes trying to find the Gavin Brown experience space and then we did and it was closed! - see last photo and the excellent signage - back to work

referencesreferenced

later ...a day in London on route to Heathrow - first up ...Whitechapel Gallery - The Production Line of Happiness - an exhibition concerned with image making and the deconstruction of image presentation - quite marvellous whilst upstairs a piece by Jan Toomick moved me to tears - dancing with dad a video work, has the artist dancing manically to voodoo childe by Jimmy Hendrix on the grave of his father. Beautifully sad. http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/christopher-williams/
Theaster Gates at white cube is just stunning - extraordinary work, made from the everyday, sublime in its understanding and the art references come thick and fast, the most knowing show i've seen in a while - a joy. http://whitecube.com/exhibitions/theaster_gates_bermondsey_2015/
The Vinyl Factory at Brewer Street has supersymmetry by Ryoji Ikeda its a little impenetrable but a great spectacle. The first room has a number of receptacles that hold hundreds of small ball bearings, it is titled just enough to get them moving and the patterns they create you would not believe - random magic! The second room is a documentation of what has happened in the first room (i think). http://www.thevinylfactory.com/vinyl-factory-news/ryoji-ikeda-and-the-vinyl-factory-present-supersymmetry-at-brewer-street-car-park/

walkwalkwalkingtrip

A great day in London with the MA Book Art Students – a road trip – well more like a walking tour taking in 5 galleries and Bond Street. The day was full of wonderfully insightful comments and engaging conversations as ever, with the added layering/reading of the work through a range of cultural lenses and youth. The day was about the lead up to the final shows – looking at display, the use of text and spaces engagement with the work (the viewing experience). But at the same time it’s important to see actual work and for this work to have a diverse range of international voices - The trip took in the American Susan Sze at Victoria Miro – http://www.victoria-miro.com/exhibitions/current/ although still as playful as her work for the Biennale in Venice this show appeared more focused but still playful. motinternational was showing work by the French artist Nil Yalter that she has undertaken whilst working with Kurdish women in Turkey. Tiwani Contemporary had Ruby Onyinyechi’s large scale hybrid drawings, a Nigerian artist who grew up in the UK and now living in the USA. White rainbow was showing Chu Enoki. This Japanese artist has a range of working practices – his head shaving performance piece is still shockingly odd. The ICA has a range of work but we focused on the ‘archive’ shows of Adrian Henri and Dor Guez. One a ‘straight’ archive show the other more nuanced with layers of storytelling and meaning(s). Fig 2 is also on – 50 shows in 50 weeks – exciting, experimental – a wonderfully dynamic way of working.

Bond Street is an interesting location to consider in relation to the idea of display – with London Fashion week in action the windows were quite spectacular. London - another country.

bonkerschairarttalk

Secured tickets to see Here Lies Love at the new Dorfman Theatre http://herelieslove.com/ can hardly wait as it sounds a little bonkers. We now own a little piece of live art history – securing La Ribobs ‘chair’ http://www.laribot.com/home at a gala auction in the Vauxhall Tavern to support Live Art Development Agency. http://www.thisisliveart.co.uk/ I really like Marcia Farquhar’s comment -  LADA is a place for people who don’t know their place.’
Lawrence Weiner at South London Gallery is quite a statement! – the main gallery has one statement on the wall and a graphic response on the opposite wall whilst upstairs the domestic space battles interestingly with the scale of the text. http://www.southlondongallery.org/page/all-in-due-course

Some interesting teaching this week – presentations, seminars and tutorials – an interesting world of specific and particular language- a space of intention and discussion that really is quite wondrous – so much so that I often feel so elated that I feel some sort of sorrow for the rest of the world who aren’t part of it!! – check out https://twitter.com/OnBeingKennyG

a good day working with Book Art students from Camberwell – out and about using London as a resource. First stop the Treasures of the British Library in the Sir John Ritblat Gallery. After setting a research task we moved around the gallery listening to each person’s new found relationship to specific individual pieces. They were asked to construct connections between the work on display and their interests, starting to form the beginning of their research practice. The books and manuscripts on display are truly magnificent each time I go I find something else that informs me of my own work, often with the support of the student’s insights.
Then onto the Photographers Gallery to see  Dalston Anatomy by Lorenzo Vitturi- the work is totally of place - the market on Ridley Road and was a great example of how to use London as a resource as well as bringing up conversations around display, referencing work within work and reading images – all in all a great day. As ever a pity about the train service – again....
There are clutch of great shows coming up which I intend to visit – here’s a list - check them out.

An excellent day out in London with the students from Camberwell Books MA. First off was the Welcome Institute – http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/exhibitions/foreign-bodies-common-ground.aspx Foreign Bodies - a show of 6 artists who had been in residence in various parts of the world – using their skills and understanding to support and engage with a number of audiences and participants – really enjoyed the fossil necklace – next off to Sadie Cole HQ – http://www.sadiecoles.com/current-exhibitions/index.html - an eclectic (messy and full of ‘random stuff’) show by Helen Marten – the space really is quite extraordinary overlooking Regent Street. After lunch it was onto her other space which turned out to be flooded so we quickly reorganised and made our way to White Cube - http://whitecube.com/ where there was a show by Lui Wei which featured huge 3D geometric shapes made from piles of sanded magazines – seductive. Before we got there taken by the image in the window we popped into Gazelli art house http://gazelliarthouse.com/uk/exhibition-view/356-TIME-OF-THE-EMPRESS-%7C-AZIZ-+-CUCHER – the video work of Aziz and Cucher was mesmerizing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdyAevdTB4A  Finally before getting the train I - popped into Dover St Market - http://london.doverstreetmarket.com/dsmpaper/collections.html to look at the latest layout – taken by the use of material in the clothes in general but specifically Erdem who have some wonderful processes within their collection http://www.erdem.com/home.php
