findingacornerinaroundearth

a walk out to Snape for an evening with English Touring Opera. Poems set to music - Shostakovich and Britten - the poems of John Donne were a revelation. I loved the spelling - onely, thinking about the idea of one coming from and within only which gets you to lonely - wondrous.

John Donne: Holy Sonnets

At the round earth's imagin'd corners, blow

At the round earth's imagin'd corners, blow

Your trumpets, angels, and arise, arise

From death, you numberless infinities

Of souls, and to your scatter'd bodies go;

All whom the flood did, and fire shall o'erthrow,

All whom war, dearth, age, agues, tyrannies,

Despair, law, chance hath slain, and you whose eyes

Shall behold God and never taste death's woe.

But let them sleep, Lord, and me mourn a space,

For if above all these my sins abound,

'Tis late to ask abundance of thy grace

When we are there; here on this lowly ground

Teach me how to repent; for that's as good

As if thou'hadst seal'd my pardon with thy blood.

X

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee

Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,

For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,

Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.

From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,

Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,

And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,

Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.

Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,

And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,

And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,

And better than thy stroake; why swell’st thou then?

One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,

And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die

burningpipesandotherstuff

Another weekend of chain-sawing and burning (outdoor housework) but I also managed to check out a couple of work in progress at Snape Maltings in Suffolk - on Saturday Indus was a piece in development by an interesting group including singers, a composer, writer, dance and movement. In my mind it threw up lots  of thinking around the idea of interpretation and a voice in terms of audio description. The second work I saw on Sunday was a kind of mash up - as if the Cantina band from Star Wars was from a folk background. A brass folk band mixed with musical theatre. I love going to see stuff at Snape, especially in the Hoffman building when the exposed pipe work is a dream. Meanwhile James Cousins Company at Dance House in Ipswich was awesome. It was all about balance and completeness, examining  wholeness. Structure v content, the connections we make how we and learning from it. Green book is a moving tale but mainly its stature is held up by the stunning performances from the lead actors https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6966692/

burningwomenforentertainmentisnevergood

so a couple of things - at Snape Maltings we saw the results of a week's residency - three witches https://snapemaltings.co.uk/whats-on/open-session-witches-three/ - unsure what was added to the genre/issue of exploring how we as a society marginalise and oppress outsiders and those deemed different that shows like Black Mirror and the artist Rachael Maclean http://www.rachelmaclean.com/ have already brought to the table, although the voices were superb. Maybe we need more reminders of our history of violence towards women - so the idea of it becoming a huge community play where the audience get to boo and cheer as women are hung (maybe the crowd could be incentivised to do this, the more you cheer the less you pay) is something that we would pay to watch - maybe do this in areas where people voted to leave the EU - maybe not, the whole idea just got very dark. I can remember shouting with glee 'crucify him' at a community mummers play in Lincolnshire in the late 80s and feeling very odd!! http://www.visit-constablecountry.co.uk/articles/matthew-hopkins-the-witch-finder-general

Caught up with and watched two seasons of Stranger things http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4574334/ some great acting and an interesting spin on the value of early game playing - you never know when rethinking dungeons and dragons will help you out with dealing with dark evil things. Have safely got my ticket to flight of the conchords at the O2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDXcPgEZj6I - it will be odd to see them there but maybe it will feel warm to be in amongst people who love them

foldedenlightenment

an evening that was both entertaining and educational – well actually more inspirational – the Boulez show at Snape https://tickets.aldeburgh.co.uk/Online/2015-festival-boulez-improvisations was quite excellent - a great idea for a way of exploring a life – moving screens, translation of sound and image, music and words projected, voices, live footage, - it was all there – I’ve always thought that performances of music and words might benefit from visuals and there it was …….Boulez explained the idea of creating systems to explore and play music – I loved the phrase – random and obliged in terms of playing choice.

Returning to folding – looking at the idea of developing systems to create large sheets of folded material. This is using both a modular approach – many similar individual elements interconnected and also working within the purity of one sheet - starting with a very large sheet and ending with a substantial smaller piece.

musicalcarpark

Got to see multi-story orchestra in Ipswich at the weekend – http://katewhitley.net/projects/  the one nice ‘extra’ moment was police sirens from the street adding into the mix – I would of liked more of the ambient sounds infiltrating what was great playing to make it worthwhile sitting in a drafty space on hard benches – otherwise I struggled to see the point of using a private car park – it would have been more interesting in a public car park so that when I next visited I could of re-invented the space in my mind – or a more random seating plan so that maybe we wandered around, or the kids could of danced - oh well a missed opportunity.

Meanwhile the final show at NUA of textiles BA students at Norwich is looking good – here’s their site http://nua15degreeshow.wix.com/nua-textiles

youngpeopleareunregulatedcapitalistspunksaskingforpermission

Two days at Snape – PLACE – a joy to be in the presence of thinking – and be reminded of the fact that Paul Morley and his voice needs to exist. Highlights – Jay Griffiths talking about the sea, Lavina Greenlaw’s moving reading and her explanation about the role of the poet and poetry and then of course Paul Morley talking about how to develop the idea of who you are or can be and thinking using the idea of the North and the detailing the spectre of capitalism......

my notes ........environmentally myopic – landscape of amnesia – a language without certain words – we construct amnesia by editing our past – over determining our future – containers as an extension of our domain -  swimming as a medative process – a notebook as home – collective sense of individuality – home is with other like minded people – unforbidden pleasures - is a man to follow rules or is a rule to follow a man – a shared project, working together – the forbidden is a structure to define and explore desire (control) – language writes the world – place name is a few stones piled up, they fall down only to be piled up by the next generation - story of the masses – the music of what happens – sounds of a place overplaying the image of a map of that place – analytic listening disentangles what is there – waiting lists for the experience of solitude – views from trains this must mean something – a name that feels like it belongs in history – who owns the landscape? – language as a temporal home – traditional practice as a time machine – occupation of language – occupying as a narrative device – neurologically re-wiring what 3 minutes of pop can be – index as position – race into the future the past holds you back – transport expands you – abstract revolution, remaking reality – old fashioned futurists – Tony Wilson as metaphysical mayor – the internet = moving whilst staying where you are – the North as an ideology – Manchester City as a modernist idea of a local football team – herded into pleased communities in our closed screened off lives – library as route out – poetry as a precise idea about imprecision – fixing a moment in time, monumentising it – magic as a form of explanation – i talk to a hall of darkness – i am making a list of my father – converted middle class barn (is there any other) – detective work around myself – self sufficiency as an ethical principle – reappropiation of the appropriated – bird watching as an art of peace – a vortex of paranoia and fear, a building that drains the voice – not where you live but where you stay – gentrification by pure capitalism –
the only gap in the weekend was that there needed to be some thinking around young people and the internet as place, a space they occupy – we appear to be a generation who moved and now we are telling others to be still, to stay, to dig where you stand – young people are doing their own thing and I do not want to hear old people talking about property prices! and then there was the choice of dull long films that could of being replaced by shorter more interesting pieces or let the speakers talk in chaired panel discussions – try Richard Dedomenici next time - http://dedomenici.com/

the weekend at Snape was top and tailed by two films - all is lost http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2017038/ a tremendous film that was framed and rethought within the concept of place and then a field in England http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2375574/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 which also had the lenses of occupation focused onto it.
