uploadingandupdating

Great to see the frames from the Jubilant! Project displayed at the Primadonna festival over the weekend. While there I was taken with Jordan Stephens’s left of field call for men to address their own pain as a way of supporting women. Looking forward to reading Unwell women by Elinor Cleghorn, especially the cultural politics around access and understanding. I have updated my website to include two projects – Jubilant! and the bookartbookshop show https://lesbicknell.wixsite.com/work/now  onto screens - Too Old for Fairy Tales – sweet coming of age story with a twist story. Purple Hearts – sweet love story with a twist. Honor Society – sweet high school story with a twist. Persuasion - sweet historical drama with a twist - the screen lights up when Richard E Grant is on it, if only he was there more

breathinginout

Wow - changing the material in the 3D printer is a revelation - the transparency reveals the structure. Yesterday was a really creative day in London – several moments of breathing in - How We Live Now: Reimagining Spaces with Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative. The show at the Barbican is very revealing - flagging up the concept of privilege. Architecture critiqued from a female perspective, looking at the underpasses in Birmingham is raw and obvious, who were these men and what were they thinking? The film Paradise circus by Heather Powell is particularly revealing of alternative thinking in 1988
I was struck by the statement they have used by David Graeber within the exhibition. “The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something that we make and could just as easily make differently”. The bookartbookshop in Shoreditch is always a real treat, Tanya and Chiara are lovely people and the space itself is full of wonderment. A real must-visit if you are in London. Cycling on the bridges, crossing the water on a bike is something to behold, another recommendation especially on such a beautiful day. And then breathing out - the focus for the day was a f2f planning session at Kings. This year's synthetic anatomy module will be a triumph. Building on the last 4 years’ experience we are honing a truly beautiful thing, which is cherished and celebrated by the people I work with there - such a joy.  Lateral thinking, problem solving, material understanding, communication, recording and presentation, all transferable skills that are valued, old school art school ways of being finding a place within the world of science education. Screens – the focus has been The White Lotus, beautifully crafted characters that get lost in the madness of luxury.

lotsofbreathingin

A very busy and full on 'breathing in' day in London on Tuesday - Tate to see Anni Albers a truly glorious exhibition https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/anni-albers It is a totally rigerous experience - the instagram festival that was Yayo Kasumi at Victoria Miro and the more thoughtful experience displayed next door at Parasol unit https://parasol-unit.org/ by Hedi Bucher. The display of the work is particularly interesting with it defining the work in so many ways. Looking at the treasures at The British Library with Book Art students gave us conversations rich and varied, especially around translation and languages. A thoughtful visit to the bookart bookshop https://bookartbookshop.com/ was thoughtfully wonderful - tea in a china cup complimented the atmosphere and underpinned a wide ranging discussion informed and illustrated by the amazing books for sale in the shop - I also managed to see Chris Burden at Gagosian - it’s actually quite mesmerising as well as beautiful. thank you for a really positive session today - thought that you might be interested to hear
Freakonomics podcast 335 Where Does Creativity Come From (and Why Do Schools Kill It Off)? was an excellent listen. It went some way to describe and explain intrinsic versus extrinsic motivations, how education places value assessments, but don't assess the things we value. http://freakonomics.com/ Meanwhile I had to see season 6 of House of Cards in 2 sittings https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856010/ There are some stunning images within the filming that stop your breath and make you consider what is established practice - when Claire reveals her new cabinet is one.

This week has seen me be a small part of the organisation that is Open College of the Arts - tutorials with students from around the world. The experience of connecting around the globe is fairly awesome/humbling and at the same time very efficient. I'm in a book! - there's an image and mention in the latest publication that covers The International Contemporary Book Fair - Pages - Future Potentials / Future Legacies. http://www.leedsartbookfair.com/pages-reviewed-collections-revisited/  it's a great photo by Chris Taylor and an interesting overview of the paperscissorsbook exhibition by Karen Babayan. I've been selling a few items of work recently so have been updating my site http://les-recent-work.blogspot.co.uk/ I've also delivered some work to the wonderful bookartbookshop http://www.bookartbookshop.com/ if you are in Hoxton I recommend dropping in - you never know what you might find. Today culminated in a glorious visit to D2W (I don't know if you know but 3D printing is the future)! Jonathan has a great take on this technology. I also got to see a number of exhibitions which were all inspirational - White Cube at Mason's Yard - Fred Tomaselli is stunning - the psychotic doodling is a futuristic version of Tom Philips at work, makes you think!!! The supreme rifts…a measured propinquity with work by Sol Lewitt, Gabriel Orozco, Gerhard Richter, Ettore Spalletti and Niele Toroni at Marian Goodman Gallery is stunning. The Richter structure is very special and his line piece feels like it is physically changing you. At Carroll / Fletcher the film piece by Wood and Harrison Semi Automatic Painting Machine in the basement is excellent - serious fun... obviously Eva and Franco Mattes are awesome but Michael Joaquin Grey's Citroid System Play Room  has some exciting elements. The whole show is a winner -  Looking at one thing and thinking of something else. An Exhibition in Four Parts - Part Four: Disrupt / Disorder / Display

bookcritleadstoshow

A great day at Camberwell - the first crit with the Book Art students work had a range of exciting starting points that I am sure will inform their personal projects. The week-long brief is a site specific structural book one where students engage with a particular space and make bookworks in response.
