somefoldedfoldsworkingmagic

two short films emphasising the 'magical' element of the work - busy day at NUA yesterday but managed to view the films on the large screen in the lecture theatre - yes sometimes bigger really is the answer

I've been invited to participate in Fashion 360 - an event created to coincide with Norwich Fashion week - I'll be showing a film that explores some of the work I've been involved in around the fold - the experimental pieces created from collaborative opportunities whilst embedded in diverse range of residencies: The Robotics Department of Kings College, London, NanoDTC, Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, The Costume and Textile Study Centre, Norwich and The Museum of East Anglia Life, Stowmarket. The work sought to explore possibilities afforded by the fold; utilizing visual thinking to problem solve, specifically developing the idea of change and adaption without compromising functionality, exploring the idea that a form takes the shape A; it becomes B and has the ability to return to A.

moretestinghands

exploring the potential of moving image and the book - I've
been working with some films I made as a continuation of the robotics work at
Kings College - trying to create something between a cold war document of the
paranormal and a close up magic show. interesting blog post from sidandjim - just
put the phone down and walk away  http://www.sidandjim.com/new-blog/2016/1/18/d-o-y-o-u-s-l-e-e-p-w-i-t-h-y-o-u-r-p-h-o-n-e-
and if you enjoy your film experience confrontational and drenched in blood see
the hateful eight and spot Tarrantino's
love of film references - my favourite was the obvious - Carrie. a great talk
from alumni of the MA Book Art course at Camberwell yesterday from collective
investigations - http://collectiveinvestigations.tumblr.com/
looking forward to the year 3 textile pecha kucha learning agreement
presentations tomorrow - potential is in the air.

evolvingcapework

working on the cape images for the next nano cape film - a busy week of teaching presentations at Camberwell include http://www.slideshare.net/l.bicknell/finishedness-0712-12 - http://www.slideshare.net/l.bicknell/context-audience-understanding- -2013 - http://www.slideshare.net/l.bicknell/context-audience-understanding2014 meanwhile a weekend of watching films - Terrence Malick's - Knight of Cups - the first 15 mins....oh dear - then after a much needed realignment and 'settling in' it evolved into a wonderful soulless meditation of drifting damaged people - everything you hate about it is the point of it. 45 Years - studied loss - stillness whilst shuffling around Norfolk. Diary of a Teenage Girl - a sad, creepy search for life's meaning - so wrong but beautifully constructed. Spotlight - a dark period in the history of the Catholic Church! the latest work for OCA is going well with an evening spent exploring context and developing relationships to making and audiences and at NUA assessments are ongoing.

nanocapeandhistory

The film has become nano cape - its the first iteration that includes
some of the ideas that have informed the ideas that led up to the designs on
the capes - the google sketch up work, film from castle museum in Norwich residency,
and live film of the lazer cut textiles from the Summer. Meanwhile its
assessment time at NUA with presentations and rooms of work to look at - the potential
for wonderfulness is all around - it will be interesting to see what the next coming
months bring. A film to watch but not if you're feeling squeamish. The Revenant is a truly beautifully brutal
film - hours of grunting, sweat, blood, dirt, cold and snow alongside the force
of nature accompanied by a soundtrack that becomes a main character in the
action.

playing with new video software I've managed to solve this piece that's been in the files for a while - meanwhile some films - The Danish Girl - really very beautiful - heavy on the lingering texture with some painterly camera work. Straight Outta Compton made you want to go out and give the original tracks an airing. In the Heart of the Sea - unfortunately the soundtrack illustrated how you were meant to feel while Ron Howard sprinkled 'overallness' everywhere, although I thought the physical interior spaces were a set/prop makers dream.

mirroredisbest

playing with the cape images - everything looks good mirrored! - and then theres some more films - Steve Jobs - managed to make behind the scenes at a product launch tense - then the film is really about people and their relationships with each other - the launches are a great device to explore the apple story and Fassbinder is frightenly good. Bridge of Spies - Tom Hanks is 'block buster believable' in this Spielberg cold war fantasy until the last 'memory train ride' but Mark Rylance understated spy steals the show.. Trumbo - yet again America navel gazes its values and comes up poorly - American Values. Snowpiercer - nonsense.
