monday saw me the big G and 30 students at 9.30 in an empty church and at 3.30 we had a show and at 5.30 a private view - the work looked good with some exciting possibilities for the next 3 years - a little interesting learning took place - some students came and thought they knew everything but some learn and by the end realised learning had taken place and that they knew a little less. the 1st years BA textile and the surface design final show is in st margarets church in norwich - pop in

an interesting week – half term – work on the Leiston bench is going well with decisions about what and where to blast within the children’s designs well underway. a day on the Book Art MA organising the final show – reduced spaces and limited resources make for a tuned mind and exciting possibilities – lateral thinking all round. more revelations due to reading educational theory for the teaching certificate. I can see the reading around reflection leading to Buddha and enlightenment – but then doesn’t everything. finally my youngest child has broken his leg again – this time on a micro scoter – it was a pleasure to meet up again with the really good people at the children’s A&E department and the fracture clinic at ipswich hospital.

meanwhile Andrew at the Perfitt’s is doing a wonderful job cutting material from the old GLC building, creating a giant 3D jigsaw by building the shapes that will be bolted together to form the bench. it will be ready for the opening ceremony. finally the teaching and learning has moved on - looking at how to present learning using a range of diagrams - the above comes from trying to build an equation re finishedness.

the bench for Leiston now has finished designs. the final session in the school pulled together the following 9 days work to create a very complex set of patterns using elements of every single one of the 90 pupils who I have worked with.

another diverse and exciting week - work at NUCA saw me getting to the core of PDP running sessions with the 1st and 2nd years around innovation and reflective thinking. the reading list focused on weird ideas that work – 11 ½ practices for promotion, managing and sustaining innovation by Robert I Sutton. i also gave a seminar titled mapping textiles and the city as part of the site body text unit on the MA Textile Culture. away from college i worked with Leiston Middle school on pattern for the Leiston bench and created an exhibition for Leiston Long Shop for Leiston Day

some of the first drawings are developing into designs/patterns to sandblast into the stone. we have been looking at how to collaborate on creating repeat patterns focusing on clarity and the idea of the symbol

the work on the bench commissioned by suffolk coastal district council for leiston is well underway. I have been working with leiston long shop museum and pupils from leiston middle school. the first day was spent with all of year 8 creating drawings of the magnificent objects in the museum. the visit was wonderfully supported by julia mael from the education department at the longshop and neil hanger from the school. also without the input from helpers and parents it would of been impossible so thank you.
